UPSC Current Affairs by Vikrant Sir

To clear the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE), staying updated with current affairs is crucial. Here’s how you can approach it:

1. Timeframe for Current Affairs

  • Focus on the last 12 months of current affairs leading up to the exam, but ideally, you should begin your preparation 1-2 years before the exam.
  • For Prelims: Current affairs from the last 12-18 months are enough. Focus on key events related to Indian and international politics, economy, environment, science & technology, and governance.
  • For Mains: You need to have a deeper understanding of current affairs for the past 1-2 years, especially for topics like social issues, economy, and international relations.
  • For Interview (Personality Test): Current affairs from the last 1-2 years are essential, particularly issues related to governance, policies, international relations, and social issues.

2. Amount of Time per Day

  • Daily Reading: Ideally, you should dedicate about 1-2 hours daily to reading current affairs. This could include:
    • Reading newspapers (The Hindu or The Indian Express are preferred for UPSC).
    • Going through current affairs magazines like Yojana and Kurukshetra, and PRS India for government-related policies.
    • Following monthly current affairs compilations from institutes like Vision IAS, Insights, or some online platforms.

3. Sources for Current Affairs:

  • Newspapers: Read editorials, articles related to national and international issues.
  • Magazines: Monthly magazines like Yojana, Kurukshetra, Frontline, and Economic & Political Weekly (EPW) are beneficial.
  • Online Platforms: Platforms like Vision IAS, Insights on India, and Forum IAS provide curated daily current affairs.

4. Consistency is Key

  • You should follow current affairs consistently throughout your preparation period. It's not just about reading news but also about retaining and connecting it with the syllabus.

5. Revising Current Affairs

  • Regular revision is necessary. Maintain notes for daily and monthly updates and ensure you revise them periodically to keep the information fresh.

Conclusion:

  • Start reading current affairs 1-2 years before your exam.
  • Dedicate 1-2 hours daily for current affairs.
  • Stick to credible sources and ensure you revise your notes frequently.
